Paul McConnell to Announce Candidacy for US House of Representatives

September 22, 2001, San Francisco – Paul McConnell will announce his candidacy for US House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 25, 2001, 12:00 Noon, Justin Herman Plaza. Mr. McConnell is running in next March’s Democratic Primary to represent California’s 8th Congressional District. The event was originally scheduled for September 11, 2001 but was postponed in light of attack on the United States.

Said Mr. McConnell on the attack, “As we mourn the dead, the injured, and all those who are touched, we can also see the bright side. The people of the United States have once again come together. Our response to this attack as individuals and as a nation shows how united, caring, and good we are as a people.”

Mr. McConnell is running for Congress with a commitment to better serve San Francisco through a combination of accountability and progressive policy on the issues that most matter to San Francisco: Transportation, Education, Energy, and Housing. He has also spoken out against the Presidio Trust and the lack of clean-up of the Hunter’s Point Ship Yard. For the first time since 1987, San Franciscan’s will have a clear choice of who they want to represent them in Congress.

Mr. McConnell is a senior leader in the business world, working in manufacturing and technical training. He is an expert at managing operations and implementing change in large organizations. He is also a community activist, applying his business and systems background to Public Policy.

No one has run against the incumbent, Nancy Pelosi, in the primary election since Harry Britt faced off against her in 1987. The incumbent is closely identified with the Democratic machine in San Francisco, which has controlled the city for the past 14 years. Mr. McConnell looks forward to providing a choice, re-invigorating democracy, and creating debate on issues of importance through the primary campaign season.
