Paul McConnell Announces Congressional Candidacy As a Democratic To Represent San Francisco September 26, 2001, San Francisco – Paul McConnell announced his candidacy to represent San Francisco in Congress to an excited crowd at Justin Herman Plaza yesterday. Mr. McConnell will take on Nancy Pelosi (D) in next March’s Democratic Primary. Mr. McConnell said in his announcement speech, “I am running because I believe I can better serve San Francisco through a combination of public policy that moves us forward and accountability.” He outlined his vision for San Francisco, speaking in detail about transportation, education, and energy. “We should have integrated, clean transportation…among the best schools in the nation…and energy that’s abundant and renewable.” He also challenged the Presidio Trust Act and the pace of the Hunter’s Point Shipyard clean up. “Here in San Francisco, we should have a Presidio that’s a national park, not a business park…We should have a shipyard that is clean…and environmental justice as the norm…Let’s repeal the Presido Trust Act and force the clean-up of the Hunter’s point shipyard.” Mr. McConnell contrasted the current state of San Francisco against his vision. “...I look at what we should have and what we do have. And I ask why…Let’s stop funding old programs that offer old solutions to new problems. Instead…let’s legislate new programs that will move us forward with policy that is for the good of all.” Addressing accountability, Mr. McConnell, a leader in the business world, said, “In the world I come from, the business world, I must show success. I must account for the money I spend. I must tell people what I am going to do, and then do it, and then show that it works. Solutions begin with accountability.” More... 1 | 2
