Pelosi Begins Re-election Campaign on Taxpayer's Dime

December 18, 2001, San Francisco – Nancy Pelosi mailed her first “Washington Update” in nearly a year to registered voters in San Francisco’s Congressional District 8 on December 13th. The update coincided with the official announcement from the Secretary of State’s office that Paul McConnell, Pelosi’s first challenger since 1994, is on the ballot for the March Democratic Primary.

Congressional Candidate McConnell responded to the Washington update by saying, “This is really a mix of promotional fluff and alarmist tactics, including conciliatory yet vague pieces on threats in schools, airline security, and bioterrorism. It failed to give constituents any useful information about the proposed solutions and intended results.”

McConnell added, “Pelosi is using alarmist tactics during a time of uncertainty as her initial campaign strategy - all on the taxpayer’s dime.”

Pelosi’s update states, “Congress needs to do more to respond to our nation’s urgent domestic security and bioterrorism needs.” McConnell agrees, but questions why, if public health is truly a concern of Pelosi’s, situations like the radioactive and chemical waste at Hunter’s Point Shipyard and Super Fund sites adjacent to the San Francisco Bay have been swept under the rug.

Regarding airline safety, Pelosi is quoted in her update as saying, “Action on airline safely is long overdue.” The heading was “Lapses Create Urgent Need.” Again, McConnell questions Pelosi’s lack of accountability - how as a 14-year incumbent, Pelosi can deem herself a champion of this cause, and not recognize some responsibility as a senior member of the House for allowing airport security to fall far behind available technologies that are designed to protect passengers, proactively.
